Dibrugarh, Nov 4: With panchayat elections in Arunachal Pradesh drawing near, the NSCN has once again started interfering in the electoral process.
Intelligence agencies have reportedly obtained a document in which the outfit issued a directive to villagers under the Wakka, Pongchau, Khakam, and Longchan circles in Longding district, instructing them not to field candidates from any party other than “the ruling government and party.”
The diktat, issued by self-styled Major General Shahkoi, further warns that anyone violating the order will face “strong action” and a fine of ₹20 lakh “without fail.”
The diktat has triggered strong reactions in the region, with the Congress taking up the matter with Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) K. T. Parnaik, seeking his intervention to ensure free and fair elections.
Interference by militant outfits from outside the Tirap, Changlang, and Longding (TCL) districts is not new. In fact, there have been numerous instances in the past where militants from outside the TCL region directly meddled in the electoral process of Arunachal Pradesh.
Such interference has often led to bloodshed — the assassination of sitting MLA Tirong Aboh and ten of his family members and associates in May 2019 being the most gruesome example.
