Guwahati, June 15: Guwahati may soon witness one of its most ambitious urban infrastructure projects yet, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing plans for a 10-kilometre flyover connecting Jalukbari directly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
According to the Chief Minister, the proposed elevated corridor could reduce travel time between Jalukbari and the airport to just 7–10 minutes, offering major relief to commuters who currently face congestion along the busy airport route. The announcement came after discussions with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has reportedly assured support for the project.

While no construction timeline has been announced yet, the proposal is expected to become a key component of Guwahati’s rapidly expanding road infrastructure network.
The proposed flyover comes amid a major transformation of the city’s transport landscape. Over the past few years, Guwahati has witnessed the completion of several high-profile projects aimed at easing traffic bottlenecks and improving connectivity.
Among them is the Nilachal Flyover at Maligaon, a 2.6-km elevated corridor connecting Maligaon Chariali to Kamakhya Gate, which significantly reduced congestion in one of the city’s busiest traffic zones.
More recently, the Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Flyover at Lalganesh was inaugurated to improve connectivity in south Guwahati and provide faster access to hospitals and residential areas.
The city has also seen the expansion of the six-lane Khanapara–Jalukbari bypass corridor, which includes multiple flyovers at Basistha, Lokhra, Gorchuk and Boragaon and has substantially improved east-west traffic movement across Guwahati.

Several other elevated corridors are either under construction or nearing completion, including the Maharaja Prithu Flyover corridor and the Dighalipukhuri–Bamunimaidan elevated road project, both designed to reduce travel time through some of the city’s most congested stretches.
Urban planners say direct airport connectivity has become increasingly important as passenger traffic at Guwahati Airport continues to grow and the city expands westward. If executed, the Jalukbari-Airport flyover would create a dedicated high-speed corridor between the city gateway and the airport, potentially transforming travel patterns for residents, tourists and business travellers alike.
For now, the project remains at the proposal stage. But if it moves forward, it could become one of the longest urban flyovers in the Northeast and another landmark addition to Guwahati’s rapidly evolving infrastructure story.
