Dibrugarh, Jan 20: An active cadre of the NSCN-Khaplang–Yung Aung (NSCN-KYA) surrendered before security forces during a joint operation in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Monday.

The surrendered individual has been identified as Akha alias Khawang Wangsu (38), a resident of Longphong village in Longding district.

According to an Assam Rifles official, credible intelligence inputs were received on Monday (January 19) regarding the presence of an active insurgent in and around Longding Bazaar and adjoining localities. Acting on the information, a joint operation was launched by personnel of the Khonsa Battalion and Longding Battalion of Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Arunachal Pradesh Police.

“Upon reaching the suspected area, ground sources were activated to establish contact with the insurgent and persuade him to surrender. Sustained counselling, negotiations and motivation were carried out by the joint team,” the official said.

After several hours of effort, the insurgent responded positively and agreed to surrender, renouncing the path of violence, the official added.

Following the surrender, the individual was taken into custody by the joint team and handed over to Longding Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Officials said the surrender highlights the continued commitment of Assam Rifles to restoring peace and normalcy in insurgency-affected areas through calibrated counter-insurgency operations, community outreach and the rehabilitation of misguided youth, in coordination with state police and civil authorities.

Security forces have intensified counter-insurgency operations in eastern Arunachal Pradesh ahead of the Republic Day celebrations to prevent any untoward incidents.
