Shillong, May 2: At a time when opposition voices on social media have been portraying the Meghalaya government as anti-teacher, a heartfelt song sung by hundreds of SSA teachers during a felicitation programme for Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma painted a very different picture on Friday.
The programme, organised by the Meghalaya SSA Schools Association Central Body and the Meghalaya 4th Teachers Association at Student Field, Jaiaw, was meant to honour the government for introducing the Structured Pay Framework (SPF), a move aimed at improving financial security and service protection for SSA and 4th teachers across the state.
But beyond the speeches and formalities, it was a simple, self-composed Khasi-English fusion song by the teachers that became the centre of the event.
Sung by hundreds of teachers, the lyrics carried words of gratitude directed at the Chief Minister and Ministers of his present and past government.
“Honourable CM sir and dearest Dy. CM; Sir R.A Sangma, for you Sir Rymbui, we appreciate your act like hero. We will never forget and always love you,” the teachers sang.
Another line read: “Thank you so much dearest ministers, that you helped us to overcome in life.”
The song sang was deeply personal rather than political. An expression from teachers who said they finally felt heard after years of uncertainty over salary structure and job security. The song yesterday had proved wrong to what the opposition has been trying to portray, where the opposition have accused the Conrad Sangma-led government of neglecting teachers and failing to address their concerns.
It maybe also noted, Meghalaya SSA Schools Association president Aristotle Rymbai had also recently expressed gratitude to the state government, particularly Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, for securing the jobs of SSA teachers and implementing a revised pay structure with allowances ahead of April 2026.
In a very recent social media post, Rymbai described the government’s intervention as “unforgettable” and praised its commitment towards protecting teachers’ livelihoods and strengthening the education sector.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma during the program yesterday also acknowledged the hardships faced by SSA teachers over the years and said the government had worked consistently to find a lasting solution through the Structured Pay Framework.
“You have gone through a lot of pain, sacrifices and struggle, but I am happy that I could be a part of this journey,” he said, while reiterating the government’s commitment to ensuring dignity, fairness and financial stability for teachers.
While social media conversations continued to paint the government as the villain in the teachers’ issue, the teachers themselves stood before the Chief Minister and openly expressed gratitude for the financial security and stability they said they had long waited for.
A gentle reminder that what dominates social media discussions does not always reflect the reality experienced by the people directly involved.
