People of Hima Langrin give KHADC 15-day ultimatum over Syiem appointment

SHILLONG, JUL 22: People of Hima Langrin under the banner of the Khun ki Hajar Hima Langrin on Wednesday issued a 15-day ultimatum to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, demanding the removal of Nongtei Sing Syiemiong as Syiem of Hima Langrin or face renewed protests.

Led by convener Wadladkyrpang L. Langrin, members marched to KHADC and met Chief Executive Member Winston Tony Lyngdoh to submit their representation.

The group said it has been opposing Syiemiong’s appointment since 2023 and has filed multiple complaints with the Council in recent days. Their core objection is to the KHADC’s decision to reappoint him to the traditional post.

“We made it clear that we cannot accept Nongtei Sing Syiemiong as the Syiem of Hima Langrin under any circumstances,” Langrin told reporters after the meeting.

According to him, Council officials said they had not yet been able to thoroughly examine the files related to the complaints. In response, the delegation set a firm deadline.

“If the Executive Committee cannot remove Nongtei Sing Syiemiong within 15 days, we will come back and hold a hunger protest until we get a clear answer from KHADC,” Langrin said.

He added that the people of Hima Langrin will not “sit idle without getting their right” and are prepared to intensify the agitation if the Council fails to respond within the stipulated period.

“We have given 15 days. If there is no reply, the people’s protest will resume. There are many ways forward and we will decide accordingly,” he said.
