SHILLONG, JUL 22: The Assembly’s Estimate Committee on Wednesday carried out a site inspection of three major ongoing projects in the state — the Pohkseh Water Supply Scheme, the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme at Mawpdang, and the 2nd IT Park Building at Shillong Technology Campus.

The visit was led by Estimate Committee Chairman Mayralborn Syiem. Committee members Miani D. Shira, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar and Remington G. Momin also took part.

Officials from the Assembly Secretariat, Public Health Engineering Department and Information Technology Department accompanied them.

At Pohkseh, the Committee reviewed the status of the water supply project. Syiem said the pumping system at the existing site had collapsed a few years ago and the issue was earlier brought to the Committee’s attention.

“The incident is unfortunate. It is not anyone’s fault. We have asked the department to identify a new location for the scheme,” he said.

He expressed hope that the PHE Department would prepare revised estimates soon.

Syiem also thanked the Dorbar Shnong of Pohkseh for providing land for the project, and said work can begin once a new site is finalized to ensure safe drinking water for households in the area.

The Committee then visited the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme at Mawpdang. PHE officials briefed members on the components already in place, including the treatment plant and related infrastructure.

Assessing progress, Syiem said both physical and financial work on the project was satisfactory.

“This project is on track. We have been informed that Phase 1 — comprising the dam, main gravity line and treatment plant — will be commissioned and completed by December 2027,” he said.

He added that Phase 2 will focus on the distribution network to supply water to different localities in New Shillong, and voiced confidence that the project would meet its timeline.

Later, the Committee inspected the 2nd IT Park Building at Shillong Technology Campus.

Syiem said the Committee was satisfied with the progress despite challenges faced by the IT Department.
Both physical and financial progress of the building was found to be satisfactory.

He noted that the new IT infrastructure is expected to create significant employment opportunities for the state’s youth and support growth of the IT sector in Meghalaya.

The Estimate Committee reiterated its commitment to monitor key public projects closely to ensure timely completion and effective use of resources for public benefit.
