Shillong, Sept 15: The state police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the tragic death of a 4-year-old girl, who went missing from her home in Nongrah Nonglum.
The girl’s body was found submerged in a waterlogged pit inside an under-construction house near her residence on Monday morning.
“The SIT will be formed in this case to ascertain the fact of the matter and to also zero down on the culprit(s),” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told reporters.
The SIT will be headed by SP (City) Herbert Kharkongor, under the overall supervision of the SP, East Khasi Hills District.
Insaphira Lyngdoh Mawnai was found missing from here residence at Nongrah Nonglum at around 8.45 am on Sunday morning.
The search party, including family members, VDP members, locals, and police personnel, along with dog squads, scoured the area but couldn’t find the child.
An alert was sounded across all police stations, and a lookout notice was issued.
Her body was recovered from an under construction house nearby on Monday morning.
The family members of Insaphira has lodged a first information report (FIR) with the Rynjah police station.
Syiem revealed that the body of young Insaphira was found by one of the labourers working in a construction site, closed by a 100 meters from her house.
“After finding the body, the forensic team had been called and her body was lifted from there and taken to NEIGRIHMS. The post mortem was done today and we are awaiting the report (as well as the forensic analysis to determine the cause of death),” he said while informing that a murder case has been registered.
The SP said police are examining witnesses, including the laborer who found the body, and will expand the investigation as more evidence is gathered.
“We are examining the labourer (who found her body). We will be examining more people as the investigation progresses,” he said.
