Must read

Pradyut Bordoloi, currently serving as the Member of Parliament from the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency since 2019, has long been regarded as one of the prominent leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC) in Assam.

Before his election to the Lok Sabha, Bordoloi was a four-term Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly, representing the Margherita constituency from 1998 to 2016. During this period, he also served as a Cabinet Minister in the Assam government from 2001 to 2015 under the leadership of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

As a minister, he held several key portfolios, including Industry & Commerce, Public Enterprises, and Power, playing a significant role in the state’s governance.

At the national level, Bordoloi was nominated by Rahul Gandhi as a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and also served as AICC Secretary in charge of Nagaland.

Academically, he is an alumnus of the prestigious Cotton College in Guwahati. He went on to pursue his Master’s degree and M.Phil. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

In 2015, Bordoloi stepped down as a minister during a cabinet reshuffle in the Tarun Gogoi-led government. He was subsequently appointed as a senior government spokesperson and advisor to the Chief Minister.

Beyond politics, Bordoloi has been an active advocate for environmental issues. He has consistently highlighted the need for people-centric policies to address “climate migration,” with a focus on the protection and rehabilitation of climate-affected populations in India. He is also a member of the Parliamentarians’ Group for Clean Air and serves on the consultative committees of the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. He spoke on the need for stringent and coordinated measures to curb the growing menace of human trafficking in Assam and North-Eastern States, need for immediate central intervention to stop illegal mining and environmental degradation and on other issues.

Born on March 28, 1958, in Margherita, Assam, Bordoloi was actively involved in politics from his college days. He began his political journey with the Youth Congress, where he held various positions and emerged as a dynamic leader.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Bordoloi retained the Nagaon seat, defeating BJP candidate Rupak Sharma by a margin of 16,572 votes.

With his exit, Pradyut Bordoloi closes a defining chapter of his Congress journey, even as the next phase of his political career begins to unfold.
