Must read

Guwahati, March 18: Ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, senior AIUDF leader and MLA Aminul Islam has resigned from the party and is likely to join the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

Islam, who represents the Mancachar constituency, had reportedly been dissatisfied with the party’s functioning for some time.
His resignation comes as a major jolt to the Badruddin Ajmal-led AIUDF ahead of the polls.

The move is being seen as part of shifting political dynamics in the state as parties gear up for the Assembly elections.

According to sources, Islam is expected to formally join the AGP in the coming days, although an official announcement on the timing of his induction is yet to be made.

Sources also claimed that the AIUDF has failed to address issues concerning minority communities and has been losing its support base among them over the past few years.

“Islam is a prominent leader in the AIUDF and holds significant influence within the party. However, he has recently been dissatisfied with its functioning and decided to quit,” a party source said.
Political analysts believe that Islam’s resignation could prove to be a significant setback for the AIUDF and may impact its prospects in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, AIUDF general secretary Hafiz Bashir Ahmed said that Aminul Islam has been suspended from the party for six years.

He added that the party’s high command was compelled to take the decision due to Islam’s alleged involvement in anti-party activities.
