Shillong, April 20: The three Language Department (Khasi, Garo and Hindi) of Shillong College on Wednesday organised the 13th S.C. Datta Memorial Lecture on the topic ‘Translation-An Important Means of Communication’ in the College’s Conference Hall at Shillong.

The College also felicitated the eminent educationist, academician and the 2022 Padma Shri awardee Prof. Badaplin War of the Department of Khasi, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who was present at the programme as the resource person.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof War observed that translation has always been an important means of communication. It is a means of sharing of human experience, thoughts and ideas cutting across linguistic, political and cultural values. In a globalised world of multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment the role of translation in the process of communication is gaining more and more significance and relevance.

Prof War also stressed on the importance of learning languages because it is only through learning of languages and through translation that the dimensions of the literary world can be broadened. This is even more relevant in the context of the multi cultural and multi lingual environment of the North eastern region of India, she said.

The Padma Shri awardee also hosted an interaction session with the students of the Khasi, Garo and Hindi language departments of the College.
