Tura, Oct 1: The Rongram Durga Puja Committee, one of the oldest in the Garo Hills, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year, marking 50 years of devotion and community spirit with elaborate festivities and social initiatives.
Established in 1975, the committee has become a cultural cornerstone of the region. This year’s celebrations, which began on September 22, have drawn large crowds from Rongram, Tura and surrounding areas. The pandal, known for its striking decorations, has been a major attraction, with hundreds of devotees and visitors thronging daily.
“We have received very positive feedback from the public this year,” said Mohan Sapkota, General Secretary of the Golden Jubilee Committee. “Since it is our 50th year, we wanted to make it special. The pandal design is our largest yet and we are grateful for the love and support from everyone.”
The milestone has been marked not only by religious rituals but also by community service. A free eye check-up camp was organised in collaboration with Bansara Eye Clinic, Shillong and school kits were distributed to underprivileged children with support from Nipon Hajong, Project Director of DRDA, West Garo Hills.
A series of cultural programmes featuring traditional dances, music and performances were held from September 23 to 25. On September 27, PHE Minister Marcuise N. Marak inaugurated the Golden Jubilee Souvenir and felicitated past presidents and secretaries of the committee for their contributions over the decades.
The celebrations will conclude with the Visarjan (idol immersion) at Rongram River on October 2, followed by a clean-up drive the next day. “We want the festivities to end on a note of responsibility by ensuring the river remains clean,” Sapkota added.
This year, 142 Durga Puja pandals have been set up across the Garo Hills, including 33 in Tura and 92 in West Garo Hills. Beyond being sites of worship, these pandals have also emerged as vibrant cultural hubs, strengthening community bonds during the festive season.
