Shillong, Nov 1: PHE Minister Marcuise Marak on Wednesday said that Rs 15 crore has been sanctioned for the project called the Onsite Sludge Management Treatment Plant.

The minister’s response came at a time when the residents of Wahlyngkien village in Mawphlang apprised him of the challenges they are facing due to the sludge being released from the treatment plant into the stream.

Despite years of complaints raised by the residents, there has been no positive outcome.

Following their meeting with the PHE minister, Arbistar Lyngdoh, Rangbah Shnong of Wahlyngkien Mawphlang mentioned the effects or the price they had to pay due to the sludge being released into the stream, which then flows to the river that passes through their village.

“The aquatic life is dead, and even paddy fields are not suitable for agricultural purposes. We have raised this issue in the past with the former PHE minister, but there has been no outcome. This time we have apprised the present minister. If the discussion we had today is not fruitful, then we will take other courses of action; we will even approach the court or the NGT if needed,” said Lyngdoh.

Meanwhile, Marak acknowledged that during his recent visit to the plant, he witnessed sludge being released into the stream. He stated that the department is taking care of the matter and that a scheme has been proposed called the Onsite Sludge Management Treatment Plant.

The sanction of Rs 15 crore has been approved for this project, for which a tender will be floated very soon.

“With the installation of this treatment plant, we will be getting another 2 MLD from there, so there won’t be any sludge disposal.

By early January or February, this plant can be expected to be setup,” mentioned Marak.
