SHILLONG, NOV 16: Information and Public Relations Minister Lahkmen Rymbui used the National Press Day celebration to underscore the pivotal role of ethical journalism in the digital era.

Addressing a gathering themed “Role of Print Media in the Digital Age,” Rymbui on Saturday highlighted the growing difficulty ordinary citizens face in discerning truth amid a deluge of information across print, electronic, and digital platforms.

He emphasized that trust is the cornerstone of journalism, achievable only when facts are rigorously checked, multiple viewpoints are included, stereotypes avoided, and vulnerable groups treated with dignity.

Citing the recent Meghalaya Media Meet, Rymbui noted Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s articulation of a four‑pillar partnership between government and media: ethical journalism, public trust, responsible use of technology, and accountability.

Rymbui affirmed the state government’s commitment to these pillars, describing ethical journalism as a “form of service” that resists sensationalism, hate, division, and stigma, while safeguarding the privacy and dignity of children and other vulnerable sections.

He pointed out that in Meghalaya’s context, respecting local culture, language, and community sentiments is essential—reporting with people, not just about them.

On technology, the Minister called for investment in digital tools, AI‑driven fact‑checking, data literacy, and content in local languages to ensure truth prevails over misinformation.

He also stressed that accountability should be a collaborative, productive exercise, urging the media to ask hard questions, investigate delays, and verify whether promises translate into tangible outcomes.

Rymbui concluded by urging the press to inform the public and instill a reading habit among children, thereby strengthening the democratic fabric of the state.
