Imphal, May 18: The city of Imphal remains tense as the curfew continues to be extended, whereas the recovery of stolen weapons from police stations has become the primary concern for security forces.

According to reports, most of these weapons have been looted allegedly by Meitei groups in Imphal and the fear of these falling in the hands of militant groups such as the PLA has security forces burning midnight oil to make their recovery.

During the initial days of violence in Manipur, more than 1,000 weapons and 10,000 rounds of ammunition were stolen from the Manipur Police Training College, two police stations, and an IRB battalion camp in Imphal by meitei groups.

Sources said police stations in Churachandpur were attacked and looted by Kukis.

Police suspects that these weapons were used by the respective communities in targeting each other in their area of dominance and continue to be used to foment trouble sporadically.

“We are making recoveries. Till now we have recovered 456 arms and 6,670 pieces of ammunition. These include those looted by both Meitei and Kuki groups. There is still some tension in the state. But we are hopeful of normalcy being restored soon,” said former CRPF DG Kuldiep Singh, who was appointed as adviser to Manipur government.
