Shoppers were also seen shopping for ornaments like dhool, pepa, Gagana, mekhla sadar, gamusa etc. Assam celebrates many kinds of Bihu Kongali or Kati Bihu, Bhogali or Magh Bihu, but Bohag Bihu is the most popular of them all as it represents abundance and gaiety. It also marks the onset of spring as well as the New Year in Assam.

Speaking to Hub News a shopkeeper said that “all these items for Bihu, like ornaments, are used in Bihu season only. But this year the sales in the market are nothing special. The price of things has increased, the price of things has increased from where we buy, so there is a price rise in the products.”

A senior citizen expressed his anguish over duplicate products in the market, he said “that Bihu is originally from the village, but today it has come to the city. 50 years ago, my mother gave me a gumsa, now you don’t find it in the market. What you find in the market these days are not real. Everything is duplicate.”

A young shopper shared the significance of wearing Gamchha to honor elders and loved ones during the festivities. She highlighted the month-long celebrations, which include visits to relatives’ homes and communal gatherings, spanning across the first and second days of the festival.
