WILLIAMNAGAR, Feb 24: In a push to strengthen Meghalaya’s non-mulberry silk sector, the Department of Sericulture, East Garo Hills, in collaboration with the Central Silk Board, Tura, organised a one-day Vanya Reshom Krishimela at DRDA Hall-I, Williamnagar, on Tuesday.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from eri, muga and other silk farmers and entrepreneurs across the district, who showcased a wide range of finished products — from handwoven textiles to value-added silk items — highlighting the growing entrepreneurial potential of the region’s vanya silk sector.
Addressing the gathering, Diana G Sangma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, underscored the economic importance of eri and muga farming in the Garo Hills. She urged farmers not to rely solely on traditional skills but to explore expansion opportunities, adopt improved technologies, and focus on branding and silk marking certification to enhance market value. Stressing quality control, she said premium standards and proper branding are key to accessing national and global markets.
During the technical sessions, Caliber M Marak, a retired official of the Central Silk Board, elaborated on the role of modern sericulture technologies in improving productivity and disease management.
Sondarani A Sangma and Vivian A Sangma spoke extensively on Eri culture practices, while Dr Mahananda Chutia, Scientist-D, Central Silk Board, briefed participants on regulatory aspects under the Seed Act and the importance of certified silk seeds in maintaining quality and yield.
District Sericulture Officer Panna G Momin, the District Horticulture Officer of Williamnagar, and the General Manager of DCIC, Williamnagar, also addressed the gathering, emphasising convergence between departments to support farmers through training, subsidies and market linkages.
