Dibrugarh, Nov 6: Tinsukia police have arrested six persons in connection with a human-trafficking racket in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday.
The accused have been identified as Dipak Phukan, Umakanta Chetri, Boby Deori Sona, Rohit Khadal, Peter Sabashi, and Ajit Munda.
According to sources, Dipak Phukan was nabbed by villagers of Duarmara Singpo village under Pengeri police station on Wednesday (Nov 5) when he attempted to take away two minors from a nearby tea estate.
The villagers handed Dipak Phukan over to Pengeri police. Following his interrogation, police arrested Umakanta, Boby, Rohit, Peter, and Ajit in connection with the case.
A case (No. 28/2025) under Sections 143(5)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been registered at Pengeri police station.
The main accused, Peter Sona, is currently absconding. Police have launched a manhunt to nab him.
Sources said the human traffickers have been targeting children from tea gardens across Upper Assam.
“Most of the human-trafficking cases have been reported from the Doomdooma area of Tinsukia. The racket has been thriving in tea garden areas, targeting poor tea garden workers,” said a source.
He added, “Children from the tea gardens are trafficked and taken to Arunachal Pradesh for household work. There is a huge labour shortage in Arunachal Pradesh.”
“Most of the time, we rescue these children from Arunachal Pradesh. A big racket is operating in the tea garden areas of Upper Assam, and many of the middlemen are locals linked to the human-trafficking network,” said a police source.
