Guwahati, Nov 6: A former militant lodged in Haflong sub-jail in Assam’s Dima Hasao district escaped from custody on Wednesday, triggering a major security alert.
The escape has raised serious concerns as the prison also houses several accused in high-profile cases, including two suspects in the Zubeen Garg death case — his band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta.

The fugitive, identified as Betsing Jaidung, a former member of the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA), reportedly fled the prison around noon.
“A possible security breach or negligence on the part of the jail staff is suspected,” a police official said.
Following the incident, a massive search operation has been launched by the police and jail authorities to track down Jaidung.

“This incident raises serious concern, and fingers have been pointed at the security personnel and jail staff. How he managed to escape from a high-security facility is being probed. An inquiry has already been ordered against the jail authorities,” the official added.
