“Sound of the Hills”: IndiGo magazine showcase the Culture of Garo Hills

Must read

Tura, Nov 3: Garo Hills have recently found a place in IndiGo Airlines’ in-flight magazine through a feature titled “Sound of the Hills.” The article highlights the region’s natural beauty, rich traditions and the well-known Wangala Festival, also called the festival of a hundred drums.

The article was written by Julie Kagti, an artist and travel writer who has been promoting the culture and crafts of Northeast India for years. Her interest in the Garo Hills began after she attended the 100 Drums Wangala Festival last year.

In her piece, Kagti shares her experiences visiting several parts of the region, including the Songsarek villages, where people continue to follow their ancestral ways of life. She also describes the beauty of Wari Chora in South Garo Hills, known for its canyons, waterfalls and clear waters. Her travels also took her to Selbalgre village, the Hoolock Gibbon Rescue Centre and a community-run Fish Sanctuary where locals protect the mahseer fish.

When IndiGo invited her to write for their magazine, Kagti said she immediately wanted to feature the Garo Hills, especially as November is the time of the Wangala Festival.

Through “Sound of the Hills,” Kagti offers readers a simple but heartfelt look at life in the Garo Hills .. a place where culture, nature and community remain deeply connected.

The article also gives travellers across India a glimpse into one of Meghalaya’s most beautiful and culturally rich regions.
