Shillong, Oct 2: South Shillong Legislator Sanbor Shullai has announced the formation of a dedicated committee to address the escalating drug problem in the region.
The committee will include representatives from the Dorbar Shnong (local council), Village Council, and other key stakeholders.
Speaking to the press after a joint meeting with police officials and local stakeholders at Jhalupara Community Hall, Shullai said, “We will form the committee, and we will select members from the Dorbar, Village Council, and stakeholders. We will then send and recommend these names to the government. Recently, the government constituted a committee to address this drug menace, and I will recommend names from the Shillong Cantonment area to be co-opted into this government-formed committee.”
This initiative comes in the wake of the recent arrest of Aisa Khatoon, also known as “Pahari,” a notorious drug kingpin operating from Lower Paltan Bazar, a hotspot for illegal activities.
Shullai emphasized the importance of collaboration among all parties involved, with the committee’s recommendations to be forwarded to the state government for further action.
In addition to tackling the drug issue, the meeting also highlighted concerns about illegal immigration. It was stressed that all non-residents in the area must have proper documentation, including police verification, to reside legally.
Shullai warned that any leaseholders who fail to comply with these requirements, or who shelter criminals, would face legal consequences. He further emphasized the need for strict enforcement, echoing Union Home Minister’s call for stronger measures against drug peddlers and illegal immigrants.
