Shillong, Jan 28: Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, took part in the opening day of the 84th All India Presiding Officers Conference (AIPOC) on Saturday held at the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in Mumbai.

The event was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressing the conference virtually.

Key discussions at the conference included reinforcing public trust in democratic institutions by upholding discipline in Parliament and state/UT legislatures, as well as enhancing the purpose and effectiveness of the committee system.

Thomas A. Sangma addressed the crucial topic of ‘strengthening people’s trust in democratic institutions’ at a conference. He emphasised the importance of maintaining discipline and decorum in Parliament, state legislatures, and union territories. He highlighted the need for lawmakers to uphold the prestige of the House, adhere to its rules, and avoid creating unruly scenes, expressing concern over recent incidents of members disregarding the Presiding Officer’s rulings.

The Meghalaya Assembly Speaker suggested that members should raise their concerns in an orderly manner and discuss grievances with the presiding officers outside the chamber.

He noted that debates in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly are conducted decently, with occasional heated exchanges but a consistent maintenance of decorum.

The speaker highlighted the absence of pandemonium or disruptive actions, with occasional walkouts being the extent of dissatisfaction expression. Additionally, he mentioned the practice of presiding officers engaging in discussions within their chambers to amicably resolve issues between the Treasury and opposition sides.
