Jowai, Nov 2: The Department of Social Work (PG and UG) of St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, organized a comprehensive General Health Camp at Lumshyrmit, Mihmyntdu, in West Jaintia Hills district on Friday.

Conducted in collaboration with SURE (Society for Urban and Rural Empowerment), Nangbah PHC, District Mental Health Programme, Jowai, Civil Hospital, Ialong, DM&HO, Jowai, and Mission Nethralaya Eye Care Centre, Shillong, the camp provided free medical services to 116 residents of the area.

The one-day camp offered general health check-ups, oral cancer screening, blood pressure and sugar monitoring, eye examinations, blood and HIV testing, and mental health counseling. Participants also attended awareness sessions on hygiene, nutrition, and lifestyle diseases, with those needing further care referred to nearby medical facilities.

Organizers said the initiative sought to promote preventive healthcare and strengthen access to essential medical services in remote communities. They highlighted the success of the inter-institutional collaboration in addressing healthcare inequities in rural Meghalaya.

Local residents welcomed the effort, noting that such camps bring crucial medical services within reach of underserved populations.
