State govt signs agreement with NEEPCO to develop two hydro electric projects

Shillong, Oct 25: Meghalaya government signed an agreement with North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) on Tuesday for the development of two hydro electric projects.

Deputy Chief Minister cum minister in-charge of Power Department, Prestone Tynsong informed that the total megawatt (mw)signed till today evening is 235 MW and these are Umiam Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3.

Tynsong also informed that the two projects signed were of 50 mw and 100 mw each. The minister further informed that the Umiam stage 3 is in the final stage and NEEPCO is expected to immediately start the implementation process.

Tynsong said that signing of the agreement is very important for the state government due to huge power deficit of 50%. He further urged NEEPCO officials to ensure that the signing of the agreement doesn’t remain just in paper but it should be made a reality.

“Very soon few more private investors whom we have entered in agreements with will have to be under review and if the need be they may be scrapped,” said Tynsong.

At the signing, he also added that once the 235 MW project is complete the state will be able to upgrade the benefit of free power by 13%.
