Three earthquakes jolt Northeast within 24 hours; Assam hit by strongest tremor

Guwahati, Jan 5: A series of three earthquakes shook different parts of Northeast India within a span of less than 24 hours, triggering brief panic among residents though no loss of life or major damage was reported.

The strongest tremor, measuring magnitude 5.1, struck early Monday morning at 4:17 am, with its epicentre in Morigaon district. According to official data, the quake occurred at a depth of 50 km, at latitude 26.37°N and longitude 92.29°E. Residents in different parts of Assam reported being awakened by shaking beds and rattling windows.

Earlier, at 3:33 am, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake was recorded in Gomati district. The tremor originated at a depth of 54 km (23.67°N, 91.50°E) and was felt lightly in parts of southern Tripura. No damage was reported.

A third, relatively mild magnitude 2.7 earthquake occurred on January 4 at 8:21 am in West Khasi Hills district. This shallow quake, at a depth of 10 km (25.53°N, 91.20°E), was barely perceptible but was recorded by monitoring stations.

Officials said the earthquakes are consistent with the region’s high seismic activity, as Northeast India lies in one of the country’s most earthquake-prone zones. Entire Northeast now in Zone VI, India’s top earthquake hazard category.

Disaster management authorities have advised people to remain calm but stay alert and follow standard safety protocols during tremors.

There have been no reports of casualties or major structural damage so far. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
