Agartala, Sept 2: Tipra Motha MLA Philip Kumar Reang on Tuesday lodged an FIR against BJP leader Pratik Dev Varma and Tripura deputy chief minister Jishnu Dev Varma, alleging that they threatened to kill him inside the MLA hostel in Agartala.
The FIR, filed at NCC police station in West Tripura district, accuses Pratik Dev Varma—son of Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan—and two others of wrongful restraint, abuse, and issuing death threats during an altercation on Monday night.
Reang stated in the complaint that while he was in discussion with his family members at his government quarter (Room No. 209, MLA Hostel near ILS Hospital), three persons approached, restrained him, and interfered in the conversation.
“They became more aggressive in nature and started uttering violent, abusive words targeting me, mentioning to slit my throat,” the MLA alleged in the FIR. He further claimed the men threatened to return with 400–500 BJP workers to kill him and his family members.
According to Reang, the accused individuals had emerged from the MLA hostel room of Promode Reang, the MLA from Santirbazar constituency. He described the incident as part of a “deep-rooted criminal conspiracy” posing an imminent threat to his life.
The MLA said he fled to the government quarter of fellow legislator Biswajit Kalai, where he and his family took shelter. “We have become entirely insecure following the expressed threat of the three miscreants,” he stated in the FIR, urging the police to take legal action to safeguard his life and property.
Speaking to reporters, Reang said he and his colleagues met Tripura chief minister Manik Saha on Tuesday morning to discuss the matter. “The chief minister assured us that he will take appropriate steps to safeguard the MLA hostel as well as inquire into the incident,” Reang said.
Reang recounted that the confrontation occurred around 10 pm. “Some three to four people tried to disturb my family discussion. I requested them to leave, but they refused and attempted to assault me. Luckily, I was saved by colleagues and hostel staff. In the meantime, they abused me with foul language and threatened me with dire consequences,” he told reporters.
