Agartala, June 24: In a stellar achievement, Tripura has become the third state in India to be declared “fully literate,” after Mizoram and Goa. With a literacy rate of 95.6%, the state has crossed the threshold that defines full literacy—marking a major milestone in its educational journey.

Speaking at a ceremony in Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, Agartala, Dr Saha cited the latest figures from ULLAS – Nav Bharat Saaksharta Karyakram (New India Literacy Programme), a centrally sponsored initiative aligned with the National Education Policy 2020. Also present were Union Education Secretary Priti Meena, Tripura Education Secretary Raval Hamendra Kumar, SCERT Director L. Darlong, Secondary Education Director N.C. Sharma and other dignitaries.

ULLAS broadens the concept of literacy from merely signing one’s name to mastering functional reading, writing, and numeracy, and now encompasses digital and financial literacy. It targets adults aged 15 and above who missed out on formal schooling, helping them integrate more fully into society and the economy.

Dr Saha urged that the success of the literacy drive be channelled into skill development and self-reliance among newly literate citizens. “Literacy is crucial for realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” he said. “When parents are illiterate, they dream of education for their children. Today, educated children are inspiring their parents to learn. This is more than a literacy campaign—it’s a social movement.”

He congratulated educators, administrators, and volunteers for their “tireless efforts” in bringing Tripura to this landmark achievement.
