Agartala, July 28: What should have been the story of a young girl in Tripura chasing her dreams has ended in unbearable tragedy.
Nothing could have been more tragic with the family unable to afford even her last rites.
In a heart-wrenching incident that has shocked Tripura, a brilliant Class 10 student, Trisha Majumdar, ended her life after allegedly being humiliated by a teacher over her monthly examination answer script.
The 16-year-old from Barpathari-Sonapur under Bilonia subdivision consumed weedicide at her home on Thursday evening. Despite being rushed to Barpathari Primary Health Centre, later Shantirbazar District Hospital, and finally Agartala GB Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries. Police have registered an unnatural death case.
According to sources, Trisha’s Biology teacher, Bina Das Patari, accused her of cheating, allegedly flung her answer script at her face, and rebuked her publicly — even though her answers were correct. Friends told local media that the humiliation left her devastated, pushing her to consume poison after returning home.
Trisha, a student of Sonapur Higher Secondary School, had consistently topped her class since Class 6. Her father, a poor farmer, was unable to afford the expenses for her last rites. Moved by the family’s plight, former Health Minister and Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman rushed to GB Hospital and provided financial assistance.
The tragedy has sparked widespread grief and anger in the community, with many questioning the handling of the incident and demanding aaccountability.
