Truckers begins indefinite agitation over non-compliance with Govt fixed transport rates

Must read

Jowai, Oct 27: Truck owners and drivers under the banner of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) on Monday launched an indefinite agitation at the Jowai Bypass, Soomer Mihmyntdu, by turning back trucks ferrying cement and clinker to factories in East Jaiñtia Hills District.

The agitation is in protest against factories in Jaiñtia Hills for allegedly failing to comply with the transportation fares fixed by the state government.

Despite an appeal from the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaiñtia Hills, who on October 24 had written to the Association to call off the proposed protest, the MCTODA went ahead with its plan, asserting that their demonstration is a demand for their rightful dues.

District authorities, including magistrates and police personnel, were deployed at the protest site to negotiate with the agitating truckers. However, efforts to persuade them to withdraw the agitation proved unsuccessful.

As of late Monday afternoon, the indefinite protest by the MCTODA continued at the Jowai Bypass, causing significant disruption to the movement of cement and clinker-laden trucks in the region.
