Tura, Dec 2: The skies over Tura were adorned with a vibrant display of kites as the Tura Kite Fest 2023 took flight at ISBT Tura on Saturday.
Organized by Wild Tour Garo Hills and Tura Adventure Club under the theme “Drugs-free Garo Hills”, the event this year had 29 participants, marking a contrast to the previous year’s impressive turnout of over 100 participants.
The event began with the registration followed by the scrutiny of competitors and kites. The solo category competition commenced at 11 am. The solo flights were held in three batches, concluding at 12:30 pm with the top 15 competitors vying for the coveted title.
Following a brief intermission, the Final category took off, which lasted for 45-minute. The competition as ultimately won by competitor no. 015, Tenzy Sangma.
The event continued with the Squad Fight. Despite the fluctuating wind conditions, the battle lasted for over 1.5 hours, with the Doreng Squad winning the battle of the skies.
Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay Sangma and GHADC MDC & High Power Committee Chairman Rakesh Sangma graced the prize distribution ceremony. Balmuri K Marak, Founder of JAPANG NGO, spoke on the menace of drugs and urged youths to steer clear of such destructive paths.
The winners of the various categories were:
– Solo Winner: Tenzy Sangma (no. 015)
– Squad Winner: Doreng Squad
– Best Dogfighter: Baithy Sangma (no. 024)
In addition, consolidation prizes were given to the Oldest competitor – 026 Dikki Sangma, youngest competitor – 027 Agano Ch Sangma, and Most creative kite – 022 Jernykova Sangma.
Also, the Meghalaya Grassroot Music Project did busking at the evening as a closing show featuring Ricky Sangma and AMVA.
