Two Khasi critical after armed mob attack in Assam

Shillong, Aug 18: Two Khasi villagers, Raju Kasar and Bikas Syngkor, were critically injured after a group of 25-30 men, allegedly from the Muslim Mia community, attacked them with daos, sharp weapons, and locally made firearms.

The violent attack incident occurred at Kalakhal Khasi Punji under Kachudaram police station, Cachar district, Assam on August 15, when six villagers went to their betel leaf plantation site.

The Khasi Students Union (KSU) Barrack Valley in a letter to the district authorities has demanded immediate action against the culprits, citing their involvement in various criminal activities, including theft, drug smuggling, and timber smuggling.

The attackers namely  Salim,  Loti, Kalamia, Nur, Mintu, Abimulla, Abdulrehman, Rosit Ali, Kalu Mia, Soit ahmed mazumdar, Bablu, Sharul Lekai, Amir san, Alta Hussain Loskor and 25 to 30 others from the Mia Muslim community, have allegedly demanded that the villagers vacate the land immediately and, upon refusal, launched a violent assault.

The injured villagers are currently fighting for their lives at Silchar Medical College and Hospital.

“It is to bring to your attention that the above mention culprits and 25 to 30 others have also warn our people with dare consequences that very soon they will burn down the village and also threaten to catch our school going girls and rape them like hell. The situation is very tense the Kalakhal village people are not able to move out of the village and school- going children especially our young girls stop going to school as their life is on threat,” KSU president Walton Rymbai stated in the letter.

“It is also learn from source that this group of gang are involved in various criminal activities in the locality such as theft, smuggling drugs, yaba tablets, ganja etc. your thorough investigation will bring every crime of these culprits within the society into light,” he said while urging speedy action towards the situation to avoid any further untoward unseen incident to prevail peace and safety of the people.

An FIR has been filed by Sibil Suchiang, wife of victim Raju Kasar, at Kachudaram Police Station.
