Itanagar, June 30: Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday visited flood-ravaged areas in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district to assess the damage caused by recent flash floods and landslides.

The two Union ministers, accompanied by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, toured the affected areas of Hoj and Potin, interacted with affected families and reviewed ongoing relief, rehabilitation and restoration efforts.

Welcoming the ministers, Khandu thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for deputing the two Union ministers to assess the situation on the ground.”Their visit reflects the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to stand with the people of Arunachal Pradesh in this hour of need,” Khandu said in a post on X.

In a separate post on Facebook, the Chief Minister said the joint visit was aimed at strengthening relief and post-flood restoration efforts.

“We interacted with affected families, reviewed the situation on the ground, and assessed the extent of the damage,” he said.

The flash flood struck the NEEPCO Colony area at Poosa on Wednesday morning, damaging houses, severing road links and triggering landslides at several locations.

Authorities are racing to restore connectivity by clearing roads blocked by debris, sludge and boulders.

Preliminary assessments indicate that around 18 residential units in and around the NEEPCO Colony were damaged. A 35-year-old woman died in the disaster, while 17 others sustained injuries.

The calamity has also cut off six districts—Keyi Panyor, Kra Daadi, Kurung Kumey, Lower Subansiri, Kamle and Upper Subansiri—from the rest of the state due to landslides and damaged roads.

Traffic along the Itanagar-Hoj-Yazali stretch of National Highway-13 has also been disrupted, further hampering movement and relief operations.

The visit by the two Union ministers comes amid intensified efforts by the state and central governments to assess losses and expedite relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-hit areas.

The authority has also urged district administrations and disaster management agencies to remain prepared for any weather-related emergencies.

Residents can access real-time weather updates and advisories through the NSDMA Weather website and the SAFER Nagaland App, the advisory added.
