Shillong, Sept 18: The Unitarian Church marked its 137th anniversary in the North East with a special celebration held at the Unitarian Church in Laban in Shillong.
The event began with a morning prayer at 9 am, followed by an afternoon service at 2 pm, which featured candle lighting and prayers. Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP), Idashisha Nongrang, served as the Chief Guest for the occasion.
Members from other churches also joined the anniversary celebration, reflecting a spirit of unity and shared faith across the Christian community in the region.
The roots of the unitarian movement lie principally in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, when people in many countries across Europe began to claim the right to read and interpret the Bible for themselves, the right to seek a direct relationship with God without the mediation of a priest or church, and the right to set their own conscience against the claims of religious institutions.
