Shillong, Sept 2: An accident on the Shillong – Pynursla highway led to a massive traffic jam on Thursday even as the precarious accident itself could have led to loss of life.

The accident took place near Laitlyngkot when a dumper hit a Maruti Swift Desire, resulting in the latter almost plunging into the adjacent precipice.

The car was hanging from the road by just two of its front wheels, while the rear wheels were in the air, looking down at the bottom of the gorge.

The occupants of the vehicle were literally hanging by a thread.

The driver and front seat passenger were not badly injured but the passengers in the back seat suffered injuries and have been taken to hospital. The dumper belongs to NHIDCL.

Mentionably, major earth cutting work is going on for the Shillong-Dawki highway on the said road, due to which there is regular movement of dumbers and heavy vehicles which otherwise has narrow stretches, especially along the gorge facing side.
