Must read

Guwahati, Sept 2: Persistent erosion by Brahmaputra river in the last couple of days has gobbled up huge chunk of land and washed away many houses in Assam’s South Salmara district.

The people are having a harrowing time due to constant erosion in the areas viz. Chatlarpur, Baushkata, Goladigi, Matifata.

The swelling river is now posing a threat to nearly 60 families in the area, where most of them are from minority BPL families.

“At least 60 houses were washed away into the river this year. We are having sleepless nights due to the massive erosion. No panchayat members have came to us to know our problems. We didn’t get any help from government side,” said a local resident.

Locals allege that no significant anti-erosion measures have been taken till date to check the perennial problem, which has become a curse for the people of the area.

“Every day we faces similar problem but the local MLA, MP have no time to visit us. Only during votes, they come to us seeking votes. Our Mosque, Madrasa are facing the threat of being washed away into the river. We urge the government to take immediate step to save us from marauding erosion,” said another resident.
