Violence in Manipur’s Thoubal: Gunmen target forces, prompt curfew; highway exchange video circulates

Imphal, Jan 18: In a recent outbreak of violence, a group of unidentified gunmen targeted security forces in Manipur’s Thoubal district, resulting in at least three Border Security Force (BSF) personnel sustaining bullet injuries. The incident unfolded late on Wednesday night when individuals from a mob attempted to breach the Thoubal police headquarters, opening fire on the security personnel, as confirmed by the police in an official statement on Thursday.

This incident took place shortly after two Manipur Police commandos lost their lives, and two others suffered gunshot wounds in an attack by heavily armed militants in Moreh, a commercial town near the Myanmar border. The police clarified that the mob’s initial focus was on the complex of the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion in Thoubal’s Khangabok area.

Following the attack, the three injured personnel, namely Constable Gourav Kumar, ASI Sobram Singh, and ASI Ramji, was rushed to a private hospital for medical treatment. In response to the escalating situation, the district administration has implemented a curfew in Thoubal.

Police sources have confirmed that both the Thoubal District Police Headquarters and the residence of the District SP were targeted in an attack.

The video capturing the exchange of gunfire on the highway has rapidly circulated and gained traction on various social media platforms.
