Guwahati, Aug 26: Assam Police on Sunday detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals who had entered India illegally and later pushed them back across the border.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on X: “Alert eyes, swift action. 36 illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators have been pushed back to Bangladesh from Sribhumi and South Salmara. These infiltrators change our demography and infringe upon the rights of the indigenous, and will be pushed back to where they belong.”
According to police, 30 of the migrants were detained near the international border in Sribhumi district on Sunday morning and repatriated after interrogation with the help of the Border Security Force (BSF).
In South Salmara Mankachar district, six more Bangladeshi nationals—including two men, two women, and two children aged one and three—were caught before they could cross into India. They had travelled from Jammu and Kashmir to Guwahati by train and then by road to the border area.
“They were noticed in the morning and later handed over to the BSF for pushback,” said district SSP Horen Tokbi.
