Addl. DC of North Garo Hills encourages PwDs to convert their talents into livelihood

Resubelpara, Dec 4: As a significant step towards inclusivity, the North Garo Hills district acknowledged the differently abled persons who are active member of the society serving in different capacities as part of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) programme at Salpara Community Hall, Mendipathar on Monday.

Speaking as the chief guest during the programme, Kapil Koch, Additional Deputy Commissioner, NGH lauded the performance of various physically abled persons who have contributed for the welfare of the society and the country as a whole.

Klingson Marak, a blind footballer from Garo Hills who have brought laurels to the state in the field of Blind Football, and Ira Singhal, a differently abled woman who has topped the civil services exam, are a few examples of the differently abled persons who have pursued their talents and achieved their dreams.

Koch encouraged the gathering of the differently abled persons to identify their talents and make a livelihood.

He also urged the gathering to support such differently abled persons by giving awareness on the various government initiatives and schemes meant to uplift the standards of persons with disabilities.

As part of the programme, awareness on Systematic Voters’ Education & Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign was also held wherein the ADC informed of the procedure of enrolling under the voters’ list and the importance of voting.

Senior Sub Divisional Medical & Health Officer, Dr N R Marak speaking as the guest of honour during the programme highlighted the activities of the medical department and apprised the gathering of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) wherein he informed that the scheme aims to improve the quality of life of children by screening children from birth to 18 years of age for defects at birth, diseases, deficiencies and development. Under the scheme treatment and surgeries are being provided free of cost.

The medical department also conducted free medical checkup camp for persons with disabilities during the programme.

In her welcome address, DSWO, N.A Sangma said every person with disabilities is a productive member of the society and the programme aimed to recognise and honour the contribution of the people with disabilities. The programme sensitised the gathering of the various opportunities being provided by the government for the upliftment of the people with disabilities.

She also informed of the vocational training being provided for the differently abled people as a channel to identify their talent and hone their skills.

The gathering was also apprised of the importance of enrolling under Unique Disability ID (UDID) card, Aadhar Card and Bank account through which the government’s financial assistance would be accessible to the beneficiaries.
