Adopt Devanagari to safeguard dialects, Amit Shah tells Tripura

Must read

Agartala, Feb 21: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called upon Tripura to adopt the Devanagari script, asserting that it would strengthen the state’s cultural identity and help preserve India’s rich linguistic heritage.

Shah was addressing the Eastern, North-Eastern, and Northern Regional Rajbhasha Sammelan on February 20 at the International Indoor Exhibition Centre in Hapania.

Highlighting Tripura’s multilingual character, Shah noted that Bangla, Kokborok and Hindi are widely spoken in the state. “In Tripura, there has been no conflict centred around language or script. All three languages are progressing simultaneously,” he said.

Referring to prominent cultural figures from the Northeast who gained national recognition through Hindi, Shah cited Dr Bhupen Hazarika, S.D. Burman, R.D. Burman and Zubeen Garg. “Everyone should accept the Devanagari script and communicate through it,” he added.

The Union Home Minister stressed that there should be no rivalry between Hindi and regional languages. “There can be no dispute between Hindi and other local languages since they are like two sisters of the same mother who have progressed hand in hand,” he said.

Emphasising the broader role of Devanagari, Shah said the script — advocated by Vinoba Bhave — forms the foundation of many Indian languages. “By linking Devanagari with all dialects, we can preserve more than 2,000 dialects across the country. These dialects will not disappear. To safeguard them, we must further strengthen the Devanagari movement and take it two steps ahead,” he said.
