AHAM opposes opening of Wine Shop in Sandagre, demand immediate cancellation of licence

Tura, May 14: The A·chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Bolori Regional Unit, has opposed the proposed opening of a wine shop at Sandagre in West Garo Hills, urging the district administration to immediately cancel the licence in the interest of public welfare.

In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills, AHAM said the proposal has sparked strong opposition from local residents, civil society groups and religious bodies. The organisation argued that the proposed outlet is located in a residential and community-sensitive area and could disturb public peace and social harmony.

Citing provisions of the Meghalaya Excise Act, CrPC and IPC, AHAM maintained that liquor licences must be granted only after considering public interest, local objections and law and order concerns.

The organisation also referred to Article 47 of the Constitution and several Supreme Court rulings to contend that liquor trade is not a fundamental right and that the State has the authority to regulate or prohibit such businesses in public interest.

AHAM warned that liquor outlets often lead to crime, anti-social activities and threats to women’s safety and demanded an immediate stay on the proposed licence along with a transparent inquiry into the approval process.

The organisation further said it would pursue legal action and democratic protests if the authorities fail to act.
