AIUDF’s lone Hindu MLA quits party, likely to join BJP

Guwahati, Sept 1: The lone Hindu MLA of Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has quit the party and is likely to join the BJP on Wednesday.

The MLA from Bhabanipur, Phanidhar Talukdar, resigned from the party on Tuesday, claiming that he is doing so for “the larger interest” of the people of his constituency and Assam. He would resign as MLA as well.

A first time MLA , Talukdar, has of late been ‘praising’ the BJP and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Talukdar would be the third opposition MLA to join the BJP in Assam after the March-April poll results. Earlier, Congress MLAs – Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushabta Borgohain had joined BJP.

In his resignation letter to the president of the AIUDF, Talukdar said he was stepping down from the post of secretary of the AIUDF legislative unit with immediate effect. “In addition, I am also withdrawing my primary membership of the AIUDF party in the larger interest of the people of my constituency and the people of Assam,” he said in his letter.

He had won the Bhabanipur seat defeating Ranjit Deka of AGP by a margin of over 3000 votes.

AIUDF is seen as a party that has hug influence among Bengali Muslims of Assam.

AIUDF had won 16 seats , now with Talukdar gone , their party would be reduced to 15 MLAs in state Assembly.
