Dibrugarh, June 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday night visited a relief camp in Sivasagar district to meet families affected by the ongoing gas leak from ONGC’s rig RDS 147, assuring them of full support during the crisis.

Interacting with evacuees at the Bhati Bongaon camp, Sarma announced appropriate compensation for all affected and full financial assistance to the family of the deceased. The Chief Minister also ordered an investigation into “SK Petro”, a controversial firm allegedly linked to the blowout.

“I am in constant touch with senior ONGC officials. We are closely monitoring developments and are prepared to escalate the matter to the Prime Minister if required,” Sarma stated.

Chief Minister Sarma is scheduled to have discussion with Union Minister Hardeep S Puri and Chairman (ONGC) to expedite this process and engage foreign experts.

He assured the people that government will ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

The gas leak, which began on June 12, has continued for the sixth consecutive day, forcing the evacuation of around 70 families. The relief camp is currently providing food, clean drinking water, and medical services.

Meanwhile, Congress MP and APCC president Gaurav Gogoi has written to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, demanding urgent intervention. Drawing parallels to the 2020 Baghjan disaster, Gogoi questioned the Centre’s preparedness.

“It took six months to cap the Baghjan blowout. How long will it take in Sivasagar?” Gogoi asked.
