Guwahati, Jan 13: Renowned Assamese singer and composer Samar Hazarika passed away at the age of 75 at his residence in Guwahati on Tuesday morning.
The youngest brother of music icon Bhupen Hazarika, Samar Hazarika breathed his last around 8.45 am at his home in Nizarapar following a brief illness, family sources said. He had been unwell for some time and was discharged from hospital about a fortnight ago after treatment.
Hazarika began his musical journey in 1960 and released his first album, Uttar Konwar Pratima Barua Devi, in 1968. Over the decades, he created several timeless songs and earned widespread popularity, notably for the evergreen number Prothom Morome Jodi Sohari Napai. He also lent his voice to numerous Assamese films.
He made his playback singing debut in December 1977 with the film Upapath, directed by Hemanta Dutta. Thereafter, he went on to sing for more than twenty Assamese films, including Bijuli, Bowari, Ghar Sansar, Sonmoina, Bohagor Duporiya, Chiraj, Ranganadi, Ashanta Prahar and Protishodh, among others.
Samar Hazarika is survived by his wife Sobha Hazarika, son Dawor Hazarika, daughter Namrata Hazarika, and a host of relatives and admirers.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep grief over the veteran singer’s demise, saying his soulful voice illuminated countless occasions and that he made indelible contributions to Assam’s cultural landscape. The Chief Minister also noted Hazarika’s role in carrying forward the rich legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and his contributions to efforts marking the music legend’s birth centenary.
“With his passing, Assam has lost another golden voice,” Sarma said, extending condolences to the bereaved family and admirers.
