Guwahati, Aug 10: In a major breakthrough against cybercrime, Assam Police have arrested Shoriful Islam from Kolkata for masterminding a series of high-value loan frauds targeting leading private banks and financial institutions through identity theft.
Islam, the key accused in multiple cyber fraud cases in central Assam’s Morigaon district, allegedly used forged Aadhaar cards and fake mobile numbers to obtain loans fraudulently. Police said he had siphoned off at least ₹1 crore from various financial institutions.
Four separate cases have been registered against him across Morigaon district, and his properties have been attached under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Brought to Assam on a transit remand on Friday, Islam was produced before a local court and sent to five days’ police custody.
Investigators revealed that fraudsters like Islam typically obtain PAN details of financially sound individuals—often established businessmen from outside the state with strong CIBIL scores—from undisclosed sources. These PAN numbers are then used to create fake Aadhaar cards in the victim’s name.
“There are very tactful steps in stealing identity,” a police official explained. “The fake identity documents are used to apply for loans, and fake SIM cards—procured from a thriving black market—are essential for receiving OTPs during the approval process. These SIMs are destroyed soon after the loans are disbursed.”
According to Morigaon Additional SP (Crime) Samiran Baishya, Islam had been evading arrest for over two and a half years, moving across states to avoid capture. “This arrest is the result of sustained tracking and inter-state coordination,” Baishya said.
