Dibrugarh, July 2: The Assam government’s vision of developing Dibrugarh as the state’s “second capital” took centre stage at a high-level review meeting on Thursday, where ministers and officials assessed the progress of development projects and public welfare schemes in the district.
The meeting, chaired by Water Resources Minister and Dibrugarh Guardian Minister Sushanta Borgohain at the District Commissioner’s office, reviewed the physical and financial progress of ongoing projects and stressed the need for more people-centric governance.
State Cabinet Minister Bimal Borah, Rajya Sabha MP Terash Gowala, MLAs Prasanta Phukan, Chakradhar Gogoi, Binod Hazarika and Taranga Gogoi, along with senior district officials, attended the meeting.
Borgohain directed officials to ensure the timely completion of projects and called for effective implementation of government schemes so that benefits reach the intended beneficiaries without leakages.
Officials from various departments presented updates on road infrastructure, drinking water supply, health services, education and rural livelihood programmes.
The health and water resources departments reported progress in upgrading primary health centres and expanding drinking water coverage in remote areas, while the Public Works Department briefed the meeting on road maintenance, patchwork and rural connectivity initiatives.
District-specific issues such as flood mitigation, riverbank protection, drainage improvement and strengthening of local market infrastructure also figured prominently during the discussions.
Reiterating the government’s long-term development plans for the district, Borgohain said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was making sustained efforts to transform Dibrugarh into Assam’s second capital.
“Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been making continuous efforts to develop Dibrugarh district as the second capital of the state. We are all committed to working together to make this dream a reality,” he said.
The minister stressed that infrastructure development and institutional strengthening would be key to realising the vision of Dibrugarh emerging as a major administrative and economic hub in Upper Assam.
