BJP leaders leave party to rally for Deborah in Williamnagar

Must read

TURA, Jan 8: The BJP party in crucial Williamnagar seat of East Garo Hills is facing an existential crisis with one after another of its leaders defecting to the Congress at a critical time for the party that is galvanising it’s supporters to try and take on the NPP and the TMC.

On Saturday, three BJP leaders joined the Congress with their supporters in the presence of Congress candidate and former minister Deborah C Marak at Williamnagar.

The three BJP leaders to join the congress were BJP’s mandal joint secretary Gerald Marak and youth secretary Denybirth Momin and the party’s former MDC candidate Greatwell R Sangma.

Speaking at the induction ceremony into the congress fold in the presence of Deborah Marak on Saturday, Greatwell together with Gerald and Denybirth Momin clarified their reasons for leaving the BJP and extending support to the congress.

“We feel it is only the Congress that can provide a people’s governance because we have witnessed the failure of the current NPP led government in which the BJP is a partner,” said the trio.

Acknowledging the “people friendly” works of past congress governments, they said that it turned them to support the congress in place of their own BJP party.

Welcoming them to the congress fold, Deborah Marak told Hub News that the BJP has been almost completely eroded from Williamnagar with almost all its senior leaders resigning and joining the congress party.

She cited the decision of former state civil service officer and former BJP candidate for Williamnagar, Santosh R Marak, who expressed disillusionment with the saffron party and walked off to join the Congress with his supporters and is now campaigning vigorously for her.

“The BJP is no longer a worthy opponent in the coming elections. In fact they will not even find a candidate to take on us (Congress). The upcoming battle will be with NPP’s Marcuise Marak who is facing a massive anti-incumbency factor for failing to deliver to the people of Williamnagar and East Garo Hills,” stated Deborah Marak to HUB News.

The Congress candidate is so far having it good as far as campaigning is concerned with even an Independent candidate, Lucky Momin, backing off from the upcoming contest and joining her campaign trail.
