Guwahati, Sept 27: Police have arrested a 35-year-old employee of the Cachar district Commissioner’s office in Assam for allegedly raping a Grade-4 colleague.
The accused, identified as Saumitra Nath of Silchar, was taken into custody on September 25 from his residence, a day after the victim lodged a complaint at Silchar Sadar Police Station.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on September 24 when the woman accepted a lift from her senior colleague while returning home. Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Numal Mahatta told reporters: “As per her complaint, he offered her a ride from the office late in the evening. Upon reaching her residence, he insisted on entering the house. When she refused, he allegedly forced his way in and raped her.”
Police said the accused was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. “We have recorded the statements of both the victim and the accused, and further investigation is under way,” Mahatta added.
Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav termed the incident “unfortunate” and assured full support to the survivor. “We are taking all possible lawful steps. Proper legal actions will be taken as per law against the accused,” he said. Following the incident, the victim requested a transfer out of Silchar headquarters, which the DC said would be considered as per rules.
In a separate case, a district court in Cachar on Friday sentenced a 31-year-old man to 25 years in prison for raping a 16-year-old girl during Durga Puja celebrations last year. The accused was arrested after the victim’s family filed a complaint at Udharbond Police Station.
