Shillong, July 15: The Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU) marked a historic milestone with the successful convening of its first Academic Council meeting at the University’s main campus in Tura, West Garo Hills District on July 11.

The meeting was attended in full by all members of the Academic Council and marks a foundational moment in the academic evolution of the University.

This first sitting saw the formal adoption of key academic regulations, approval of undergraduate and postgraduate syllabi, and the ratification of the Boards of Studies constituted across various disciplines.

In total, syllabi were approved for 15 postgraduate and 21 undergraduate disciplines, including subjects from the sciences, humanities, social sciences, commerce and regional languages.

These include: Anthropology, Assamese, Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Commerce, Economics, Education, English, Environmental Sciences, Garo, Geography, History, Khasi, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Political Sciences, Social Work, Sociology and Zoology.

The 21 undergraduate and 15 postgraduate Boards of Studies, which met in June 2025, laid the academic foundation by preparing the syllabi in accordance with the NEP 2020 guidelines, ensuring outcome-based, multidisciplinary, and inclusive education.

The meeting represents a major step forward in operationalising the academic structure of CWSSU, not only for its own departments but also for colleges seeking affiliation under the University.

“With the adoption of essential regulations concerning admissions, fee structures, service conditions, and affiliation norms, CWSSU is now fully geared to launch its first academic session 2025-26,” Registrar of the University A Ch Marak said.

“This milestone is a significant development for the entire state of Meghalaya and the Northeastern region of India, positioning the University as an emerging hub of higher education, academic excellence, and regional empowerment,” he stated.
