Shillong, Aug 1: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Friday said it is time for the Centre to make its stand clear on whether or not it will consider the resolutions passed by the state Assembly for implementation of the inner line permit (ILP) and inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India.
Addressing the media persons, Tynsong has dismissed the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma’s allegations on the issue and said that the state government has been actively engaging with the Centre on the ILP issue, with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma regularly meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to push for its implementation.
The government has also been following up with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to consider the resolution passed by the state Assembly.
Tynsong revealed that the state government has met with the Centre not less than 10-15 times in a year, and the Centre has assured that the ILP issue is being examined.
“When we met them as I said to you I think not less than 10-15 times in a year and till today when we met them they (Centre) said we are examining the issues including ILP and inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages. But we still keep reminding them and we keep following up with them,” he said.
“I am sure one day I think this issue will have to be known if they don’t give tell us frankly that you don’t or if you give also please tell us that yes that we are going to consider both the resolutions. Let me tell you one thing from the government side it is not that we are lying, it is not that we are sleeping but we are pursuing this matter aggressively,” Tynsong said while expressing optimism that the Centre will provide a clear response on the issue, either positive or negative.
Tynsong reiterated that the current government is committed to pursuing the ILP issue aggressively, contrary to Sangma’s claims.
To a question, Tynsong clarified that there are no alternative options being considered by the government, and the ILP issue is being pursued as a separate entity from the Sixth Schedule.
“There is no option made by the government of India, never at all. We never had that kind of option as Sixth Schedule is a different issue altogether and then ILP is different issue altogether,” he stated.
