Shillong, June 15: The Central Government has approved ₹951.27 crore for the construction of a new 29.03-kilometre Tura Bypass in Meghalaya, aimed at decongesting the busy urban areas of Tura town and improving road safety.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, made the announcement on social media, stating that the bypass will connect NH-127B to NH-217 and will be built to a 2-lane standard with paved shoulders.

The project holds strategic significance as NH-217, earlier known as NH-51, is a key route connecting Guwahati to Dalu on the India-Bangladesh border, where an inland customs check-post is located.

According to the Union Minister, the bypass will begin near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and end at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is intended to bypass the congested core of Tura town, where the current road alignment is narrow and overcrowded.

Once completed, the new route will divert traffic away from the main town, easing pressure on local roads and enhancing travel safety and efficiency in the region.
