Guwahati, Sept 11: Tension gripped Kokrajhar district in Assam after violent clashes broke out between supporters of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) ahead of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections scheduled for September 22.
Several people were injured and vehicles were damaged in the late-night violence. The first incident occurred around 10 p.m. in Tintila, where BPF workers allegedly attacked UPPL supporters and vandalised two vehicles. Hours later, at about 1:30 a.m., nearly 200 UPPL supporters reportedly retaliated by attacking the BPF office at Nayekgaon, leaving more workers injured and three vehicles damaged.
Both parties have lodged complaints and demanded action against each other’s workers.
The clashes come amid high-stakes campaigning in the Baukhungri constituency, where UPPL’s Ranjit Kumar Basumatary faces off against BPF’s Dhaneswar Goyari. UPPL, which currently rules the BTC in alliance with the BJP and Gana Suraksha Party, is seeking a second term, while the Hagrama Mohilary-led BPF is eyeing a comeback after one term in opposition.
Although UPPL is part of the NDA, the BJP is contesting the elections independently, hoping to form the council for the first time.
